We are currently looking for an electronic engineering, ICT or telecommunications graduate to join this leading firm of Patent Information Analysts. The post involves retrieval of patents and technical literature, and assessment of their relevance for patentability, validity and freedom to operate.
We provide a valuable service to patent attorneys and solicitors, helping them to promote and defend their clients’ intellectual property, e.g. by determining whether they are likely to receive patents for their inventions, whether their commercial projects infringe patent rights held by other parties, and if so whether they can mount a challenge to such rights by showing that those inventions were not actually new when filed, or were obvious in the light of the published prior art. Similar considerations apply to registered designs covering the appearance of products.
The work thus requires a combination of technical understanding, high vigilance and an imaginative approach to strategies for retrieving information from the world’s vast patent literature.
Training is given on the job, with the aid of short classroom or online courses from the main database providers. A patent analyst qualification is under development by CEPIUG, the Confederacy of European Patent Information User Groups, and working in our firm would be an excellent foundation for obtaining this qualification.
We divide our coverage of technology into four areas: electrical and electronics, chemistry and pharmaceutics, biotechnology, and mechanical and general.
The subjects we encounter range very widely even within each of these areas. The successful electronics candidate would be required to deal with a broad range of topics including telecommunications, sensors and instrumentation, computer software and hardware, electrical power and machinery. It would be an asset if they could handle mechanical engineering subjects as well.
Salary will be determined on the basis of qualifications and relevant experience.
