Andrea Petersen spent six months in White & Case's Hong Kong office thanks to the firm’s guaranteed international seat for every trainee
Tell us about your international seat...
During my time in the Corporate/M&A team in Hong Kong, I worked on a number of matters and completed trainee tasks similar to those I had undertaken in London. This included drafting documents, ensuring security had been registered in numerous foreign jurisdictions, liaising with local counsel, performing post-closing tasks, as well as conducting research on the regulatory approvals required for change of control of banks and insurance companies in Hong Kong.
How easy was it to settle into another country?
I found it relatively easy since Hong Kong is an incredibly fun and eclectic city. There is so much to do in six months; it's difficult to imagine how anyone couldn't have a great time.
How did you benefit from the international seat?
I absolutely loved the experience and would do it again in a heartbeat. It was great to experience our multi-jurisdictional USP in action for myself, working with many of our other offices as well as my colleagues from the London team on deals - which is something I hadn't truly experienced before doing my seat abroad.
I've worked on deals which include partners from the Hong Kong office, whom I otherwise wouldn't have been familiar with, and being able to put a face or personality to a name makes working relations so much easier.
Would you advise other trainees to undertake an international seat?
Definitely. I had a fantastic time and the exposure I got was invaluable and will stay with me for a lifetime.
