Accountancy Graduate Scheme

Job description

We are hiring for graduates to work in our growing Tax and Accounts teams. Working with a team of proactive professionals at various levels in their own tax and accounting careers, you'll learn the full range of core finance skills. You'll have exposure to and be responsible for client work from the very beginning, building your own portfolio of clients and areas of technical expertise. Over time you'll progress to leading more complex finance work as your joined up knowledge and ability to add value to your clients deepen.

All we ask is that you can demonstrate reliability, enthusiasm and emotional intelligence. With these, and recognition that rewards will come from hard work, then we would love to hear from you.

Tax stream

With the level of support and training from our Tax team, by joining the Tax stream can expect to be undertaking real work from the start. Undertaking projects in tax compliance and advisory work or liaising with other departments and HM Revenue & Customs, you will be working in partnership with clients and the wider team to ensure internal processes and procedures are followed so that our work runs smoothly.

Audit and accounts

From the very beginning you will have the best training and support from our Audit and Accounts team. By joining the Accounts stream you can expect to be delivering on real projects. These would include preparing year end accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies. Or, preparing corporation tax computations and undertaking audit work. Whatever you start with, you will be working collaboratively with the Accounts team and keeping up to date with the progress of projects and client communications.

Whichever stream you choose to apply to, you can be sure of a great working environment where continuing professional development is encouraged, and learning is ‘hands on’ with clients and experienced colleagues.

Starting salary

Our graduates earn more in value than the £21,000 starting salary. We make sure our teams are provided with a blend of interesting and challenging work, have the time to contribute ideas and concentrate on personal development. It is important that they can enjoy a healthy life balance, so we have a range of policies in place to support this, including a core hours policy and zero overtime policy.

What we are looking for

As a 2023 finalist or recent graduate, the Shorts Graduate Scheme will suit you if you want to start your career in a structured role designed to support your career development from day one. We are looking for applicants who:

  • Are pursuing a career in tax or accountancy.
  • Have an exceptional eye for detail.
  • Have good time management, with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Are excellent communicators – both verbal and written – and able to confidently communicate with clients and the Shorts team.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence and enthusiasm for our industry.
  • Are excited to undertake further professional studies to become a Chartered Tax Advisor or Chartered Accountant.

We are open to all degree disciplines, and particularly welcome those studying finance, accountancy, economics, maths or business studies related disciplines. We don’t mind where you studied or what your degree classification is either; it’s the person that matters to us most. If you are interested in our profession, then we want to hear from you.

Shorts welcomes applications from candidates of any background, and if you feel there is a barrier to making an application with us, please get in touch.
