Chemical & Minerals Trading Graduate Trainees

Still recruiting throughout COVID‑19

Job description

Do you have a degree in chemistry, biology or a closely-related science subject with a solid understanding and genuine interest in chemicals? Do you have at least a years’ experience of working in a commercial business environment, either in logistics or with a chemical company?

We are looking for two business-focussed graduates to learn the end to end logistics and global shipping processes which are the life blood of Newport Industries. The post holders will come on board with a mission to learn about all aspects of our business, and can expect to be supported and trained in doing so.

We see these positions as being ones which would suit people who want to develop a long-term career within our company. This has worked for a number of graduates who have joined our business early in their careers and still continue to grow with us!

The key focus areas for professional development will be related to chartering vessels and shipbroking activities, or moving into fully fledged Chemical Trading. We see logical lines of career progression where intelligent and hard-working individuals could gain valuable professional qualifications, financially supported by Newport Industries, and build the foundations for flourishing careers in this growing sector.

You will initially take responsibility to settle into the business and work as Logistics Coordinators, learning how to process customer orders from start to end, receiving orders from the sales team, and then liaising both internally and externally with suppliers, docks, warehouses and hauliers to ensure that orders are fulfilled efficiently, as economically as possible to maximise profitability, and always meeting client demands on timing to final destination.

You will then be willing and able to study for either a Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (“CILT”) qualification, or an Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (“ICM”) shipbroking qualification. Newport Industries will fund these courses, but will expect the post holders to do the necessary study work in their own personal time. (Some paid time off work will be granted to sit exams per the Company’s Training Policy.)

Are you looking to enter a thriving industry and develop a long-term career with a busy growing business? If so, then this is the opportunity for you.

This position will require you to learn processes and procedures quickly to ensure that orders are processed and entered accurately onto the appropriate systems. You will be ensuring that inbound stock is available and allocated to meet outgoing order demands, dealing with customs paperwork, the negotiation and procurement of goods and services. You will organise appropriate shipping and transport with our partners to get products to our customers on time, and then liaise with the Finance team to ensure timely invoicing. From time to time you will get involved in physical stock checks at locations across the UK, visiting port and warehouse environments.

You will learn about QA compliance as well as the essential environmental and health and safety regulations which we need to adhere to in order to meet various regulated standards in our operations.

Interested? Great. We’d be delighted to hear from you if you have the types of experience we need, and the enthusiasm to join this growing team.

What we are looking for

To succeed, the post holders will need to have a keen interest in learning more about chartering and shipbroking and trading along with the willingness and personal drive to undertake professional study and achieve these specialist qualifications while working in busy operational positions.

All applicants must have the legal right to live and work in the UK.

You will have a relevant degree (or equivalent qualification), and at least a years commercial experience in a relevant chemical business or commercial logistics environment. You must have good written English skills, with good basic IT skills (Excel, ERP systems). You will be numerate, with meticulous attention to detail and experience of maintaining physical and electronic records.

You will be able to quickly learn and understand our business, ensure that compliance and safety standards are met and maintained at all times, and will be articulate, able to communicate clearly and professionally in English with colleagues and customers at all levels.

You're self-sufficient and practical attitude will be complimented by a flexibility and willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to work in a small team environment to achieve our common goals.
