Education Content Production Co-ordinator

Job description

Between the newspaper going to press on Tuesday lunchtime and the Friday afternoon resources deadline, the First News Education Team create the week’s accompanying reading activities. These are produced in two formats: as PDFs for schools to print out, and in the iHub – where pupils login in and complete activities online, motivated by gamification.

The team includes our FN Head of Education, external freelance education writers, FN Designer, an internal subbing team and the Education Content Production Co-ordinator.

Responsibilities

1) Coordinating the Weekly Production Process

  • Work with the Education Team to produce high quality resources every week
  • Liaise with, and coordinate the team (in the office and via an online project management tool) to ensure necessary editorial content and assets are available at the required times throughout the weekly process
  • Manage multiple online and offline tasks and projects
  • Predict, and where possible manage, potential problems that could impact on the weekly production schedule
  • Create and write weekly resources email newsletters for subscribing schools
  • Contribute to the writing of interactive news quizzes as needed

2) Resource Production

iHub Activities

  • Create weekly articles and activities in the iHub based on requirements and content provided by education writers
  • Follow and interpret iHub design guidelines to ensure appropriate ‘look’ of articles and activities
  • Source additional, appropriate images for news stories for articles and glossaries, and manipulate images in Photoshop as needed
  • Write and upload Polls and News Gallery stories to the iHub each week
  • Sub-edit all iHub activities and co-ordinate subediting process with the team

PDF Activities

  • Source additional, appropriate images for news stories
  • Sub-edit all PDF activities and co-ordinate subediting process with the team
  • Make subbing amends in InDesign
  • Manage the weekly resources section of the First News for Schools website and upload finished PDF resources

3) iHub Development and Customer Support

  • Become an iHUB guru
  • Support the customer services team to help with day-to-day iHub queries from schools as required
  • Create online iHub support materials when needed
  • Identify and collate bugs and potential improvements for the iHub – for pupils, teachers and FN admin staff – from schools’ feedback and own experience to feed into the on-going iHub development process
  • Support the internal digital team with iHub maintenance and development projects

What we are looking for

  • We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Education Content Production Co-ordinator who has excellent organisational skills and a strong eye for detail and design.
  • Be highly organised and able to multi-task and prioritise effectively
  • Have excellent project management skills
  • Have a good command of written English, a sharp eye for detail and design
  • Have excellent sub-editing skills
  • Be highly competent in new technologies and be keen to develop ability to use a variety of new tools and software. (Support will be given but initiative is needed.)
  • Be interested in news, writing, images, design and how children learn
  • Be a confident communicator
  • Have some experience of leading projects, and working and communicating with different groups of people
  • Able to work to regular deadlines
