The purpose of the role is to work in partnership with schools and engage with preselected challenging or vulnerable young people in sessional work, namely our award winning provision The Baxter Project. The programme aims to develop positive relationships, assist young people in their recovery from childhood adversity and trauma and promote pro-social attitudes and behaviours ultimately supporting positive change. We engage with young people in sessional work on a one to one basis (and a dog). Sessions are usually outdoors unless the weather necessitates indoor work. The primary aim is to have fun and build a relationship with a young person before addressing any underlying needs. It is important to act as a pro-socially appropriate role model. Full and ongoing training will be provided.

- To provide high quality support, meeting the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and cultural needs of young people.
- To provide a caring, supportive and nurturing environment in which young people can feel secure and free from harm and in high regard.
- Establish positive relationships and help young people gain self-control by challenging unacceptable behaviour and promoting acceptable, pro-social conduct.
- Provide emotional support at times of difficulty or stress
- Provide regular reports and feedback to the schools for monitoring purposes.
- Empower and encourage young people to prosper in their educational career.
- Facilitating a young person’s active involvement in the decision making about their lives and future.
- Encourage the young person to develop positive links with the community.
- Work in partnership with the school community ensuring efficient and effective delivery of the programme.
- Be an positive ambassador for the organisation.
- Comply with the safe working practise in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Legislation and TAGCIC related policies.
- Carry out all duties with due regard to TAGCIC Information Governance and Data Protection policies and procedures.
- Carry out all duties in line with Child Protection and safeguard practices as well as TAGCIC HR policies.
- To be a positive role model, to be able to offer advice, guidance and assistance where appropriate.
- To have a commitment to self-development and undertake training and development opportunities aimed at improving the service to young people.
- Attend and contribute to regular supervision sessions in line with the National Minimum Standards.
- Any other duties as may be required and directed by the company or the registered manager.
- To undertake other such duties as may be determined from time to time within the general scope of the role.
The length of the contract can vary depending on the school and various factors. This can be discussed during interview.
Working days: the role is advertised as a part time role, successful applications can discuss what and how many days they wish to work. Consistency is key and if a Wednesday is selected as a day of work, the ability to commit to each term time Wednesday is essential. The role is term time only i.e. 39 weeks a year as such there are 13 unpaid weeks a year.
Hours: as the role takes place in various different schools, the work hours can vary depending on the structure of the day for each school. The school day is typically 9am until 3pm however some schools to vary.
Starting salary is roughly £15 per hour - £75 per day, raising to £80 per day after successful completion of a probationary period. We say roughly because depending on the school in which you will be working your working day could be anywhere between 8:30am - 3:30pm, however the usual time is 9am - 3pm.
What we are looking for
- It is desirable but not essential that you own or have regular access to a dog that is expected to pass a behaviour assessment in order to work with children and young people.
- Previous experience of working or volunteering with young people desirable.
- The ability to undertake several hours of physical activity be it prolonged walking, hill climbing or other physical activity.
- The post is subject to Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks.
- Full and current driving license.
- Graduates in relevant fields encouraged to apply.
