Job description

The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Oana Ghita. This post is available immediately for a period of up to three years. You will join TEAM-A (Tailored Electromagnetic and Acoustic Materials Accelerator): The tailored electromagnetic and acoustic materials accelerator, an EPSRC Prosperity Partnership programme. The aim of this partnership, which builds upon the successful relationship that exists between the University of Exeter and QinetiQ, is to develop advanced materials that can be used to control and manipulate the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic energy, in a highly tailored, bespoke fashion, and develop innovative techniques for their cost-effective manufacture.

The post will focus on fabrication of novel composite materials for additive manufacture of complex structures for radio frequency control. The aim is to control dispersion of magnetically lossy particles; to use inclusions of different morphologies and aspect ratios in tailored configurations (specific alignment or spacing); to utilise mixtures of particulate materials or particles of graded densities.

Powder bed processes and free form fabrication methods will be used to manufacture samples. The position will require knowledge of powder specifications for laser sintering (e.g. powder bulk density, compaction, flow, permeability, aeration) manufacture, properties and behaviour of composites and nano-composites.

You will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Person requirements

Due to the nature of the work that QinetiQ is involved with, applicants will be expected to get security clearance. Qualifications and experience requirements

You will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, you will be a nationally recognised authority in an aspect of materials science or engineering and be skilled in the practice, and theory, of additive layer manufacturing. You will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

You will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Fellow (grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role. You should demonstrate your achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.
