Joining our 10-week summer placement scheme is an ideal opportunity for you to gain valuable skills and experience that will help to enrich your studies for when you return to university after the summer break.

We’re looking for students who can take on true responsibility on major projects, which will contribute to our present challenge and future mission; be involved in business critical work and experience far reach training with support from many members of the existing Sellafield Ltd community.

On our placement scheme you will get the opportunity to take part in activities that will allow you to develop your skills in line with our Graduate programme - Meaning you may get the chance to re-join the company as a graduate when you complete your degree.

Company information

Sellafield led the development of the UK’s nuclear industry, from the production of plutonium for the country’s nuclear deterrent programme through to the development of nuclear power generation. Today we are faced with the challenge of cleaning up the legacy of the site’s early operations, including some of the most hazardous nuclear facilities in Europe.

Each chapter of Sellafield’s history delivered great benefit for the country while creating a complex nuclear clean-up challenge for which there are no blueprints. Decommissioning the site will take us more than 100 years and there is much still that we don’t know. Every day we are building greater certainty and we will be the generation that makes demonstrable progress in cleaning up Sellafield.

Covering six square kilometres, the site in West Cumbria is home to more than 200 nuclear facilities and the largest inventory of untreated nuclear waste in the world. We employ approximately 11,000 people who, along with our supply chain partners, are tackling Sellafield’s current diverse portfolio of decommissioning, reprocessing, spent fuel management, nuclear waste management and nuclear material management.

As a company we are also facing challenges; preparing for the end of reprocessing and delivering our mission as efficiently as possible while providing value for money for the public funding we receive.

Person requirements

Qualifications and experience requirements

You’ll be on course for at least a 2:1 in one of the following degree disciplines:

  • Engineering* – chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, process.
  • Science – chemistry, environmental, materials, mathematics, physics.
  • Business – business related, project management.

*For engineering subjects we would prefer you to be working towards a Masters level.

Our placements are directly linked with our Graduate Scheme; preference is therefore given to those in their penultimate year of study.

  • Aptitude test - you will complete an online aptitude test in October – November 2017
