Technical Internship

Job description

11 weeks of “today, I made a difference”.

An internship at MI5 means a summer of discovery, responsibility and insight. Over 11 weeks, you’ll grow your skills, meet top tech minds and work on projects you won’t find anywhere else. It’s work with real purpose. As part of a dedicated team, you’ll spend the summer keeping the country safe.

Technology is at the heart of everything we do. So you’ll learn from pioneering technical teams, all while tackling unique work. Working with a wide range of people, you’ll collaborate on live projects. One day you could be catching up with your own personal mentor, and on another, you’ll be gaining real insight into MI5 by attending various talks, events and activities.

In London, you’ll be based in one of our technical areas:

  • Business Analysis
  • Covert Technical Operations
  • Information Architecture
  • Software Engineering

The internship will run from late June 2021 for 11 weeks.

MI5 are Equal Opportunities employers, committed to reflecting the society we protect. Our recruitment process is fair, transparent and based on merit. We particularly welcome applications from diverse and under-represented groups.

Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member.

What we are looking for

We’re after people with a passion for tech, who are keen to learn. For some areas, you’ll need basic coding skills. Others call for knowledge of data flows, computer security or computer forensics. Basic computer skills are a must-have, along with a gift for solving problems and the ability to handle different data formats. Plus, it’s important you can express yourself clearly and explain concepts well.

You should also be able to start a permanent role in Autumn 2022 if you wish to take up a permanent role under our Technical Graduate Development Programme.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. One of your parents must be a British Citizen or must have one of the nationalities or citizenships from one of the following: British Overseas territory, British subject, British National (Overseas), British protected person, citizenship of the Commonwealth, EEA nationality, or citizenship of the United States of America. If deceased, have had such citizenship or nationality before death. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. If successful, you will not normally be required to give up your non-British citizenship but, as a condition of your employment or secondment, MI5 may impose restrictions on you postings, work travel and/or general use of that nationality. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. Each case will be carefully considered on its own facts. You can apply at the age of 17 years and six months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday.

Qualifications

You’ll need to be in your second to last year of study and expecting at least a 2:2 degree (or equivalent) in a STEM-related subject by summer 2022.
