Greater Manchester is embarking on an exciting period of transition and evolving with a growing population and economy. Transport for Greater Manchester manage the largest number of traffic signals outside London, the challenges of managing such a large conurbation offers the opportunity to gain a wide breadth of experience.

TfGM currently has opportunities for talented graduate engineers to join our Traffic Graduate Development Programme providing the chance to gain experience from different teams. At the end of the programme you will work in our Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) Team.

The ITS team manage the operation of the traffic signals across Greater Manchester. In addition to formulating plans for day-to-day operation they also develop and implement strategic plans for events such as premiership and international football matches at the Etihad and Old Trafford Stadiums, large concerts and roadwork schemes. The ITS team also carry out capacity modelling for new highway schemes and provide advice to the districts of Greater Manchester regarding development proposals.

As a Traffic Graduate Engineer, you will be part of a number of exciting projects including cycling and walking initiatives such as the Greater Manchester Bee Network, reducing congestion as part of the Mayor’s congestion deal and installing and operating adaptive traffic networks to help the travelling public of Greater Manchester. You will also be involved in designing and implementing adaptive signal networks and will work alongside experienced Urban Traffic Control Engineers, which will allow you to develop in the role. Occasionally you will also be required to work out of office hours including at weekends to help manage traffic at events.

What we are looking for

You will be keen to develop your knowledge of the principles of traffic and transportation and have experience of using computer systems for data related to modelling. You will have an enquiring mind with the ability to use numbers and data to provide solutions to complex problems and the flexibility to adapt to changing workload demands and new organisational challenges.


You will also have a degree in an engineering discipline, science, maths, geography or similar.
