An upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent) at undergraduate level in an appropriate discipline but in most cases, especially for overseas applicants, a Masters degree is preferred. In some cases appropriate professional or experiential learning may be considered in combination with a lower classification of Honours degree.
Months of entry
This is a one year (three semesters) research programme, which will be supervised by one or more of our faculty members. Successful graduates will be awarded a masters degree with one of the following titles depending on the subject area of research:
- Master of Science by Research (main subject name) (MSc)
- Master of Arts by Research (main subject name) (MA)
- Master of Technology by Research (main subject name) (MTECH)
- Master of Laws by Research (main subject name) LLM
Masters by Research degrees are available in a wide range of topics across each of the four faculties (Schools) of the University.

Fees and funding
In most cases, research degree applicants are expected to source their own funding to cover tuition fees, bench fees (if applicable) and living expenses. Overseas applicants may wish to contact their local British Council Office for a list of scholarships available in their country. Occasionally, funded places are available from the University and these are advertised on the University’s jobs pages. Further information on other Scholarships is also available.
