Course content

Injury or illness may occur suddenly or may arise as a consequence of an underlying condition. Patients of almost any age and with almost any problem, which may have life threatening implications, attend emergency care services. Consequently, staff working in emergency care needs a sound clinical knowledge base across a spectrum of conditions.

This course is intended for experienced, graduate healthcare practitioners who seek to advance their practice, enhance their knowledge of research and evidence-based care, and to develop their specialist practitioner roles in the emergency care environment.

The purpose of this course is to consider and explore the common illnesses and injuries of clients attending the emergency department. The accepted initial and subsequent management of these illnesses and injuries are critically evaluated. Integral to the course is the development and exploration of knowledge, skills and professional capability in the management of the complex needs of the patient in the emergency care arena. Contemporary approaches to initial and definitive management of these illnesses and injuries are critically evaluated, through the use of effective teamwork and inter-disciplinary collaboration, and related to current key policy drivers in the practice situation. The course will examine delivery of holistic healthcare in a complex system.
