Admission is normally based on a good undergraduate degree (2:1 and above) in textiles/fashion design together with an interview. This course offers ambitious individuals the opportunity to become designers, designer-makers or textile artists, either within the professional industries or to set up small businesses independently. The programme of study allows you to freely develop creative design practice and valuable marketing and business skills, building comprehensive understanding, vision and direction.

The course is developed through tutorials, seminars, lectures, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research. You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills.

The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market. Students develop and propose a personal route of study and explore and research textiles through knit, print, weave, embroidery, mixed- media or surface engineering for fashion or interiors, applied art, or in fashion design.


Alumni work in a variety of sectors and levels of different industries in roles including: Studio/freelance/industrial designer, Designer-maker, Practising textile artist, Trend forecaster, Materials researcher, Stylist, Museum officer, Teacher.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) following the successful completion of two taught modules; Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) following the successful completion of four taught modules; Master of Arts (MA) following the successful completion of four taught modules and the double Major Project module.
