Course content

This full-time, one year PGCE course prepares you to teach your specialist subject in the 11 to 16 age range with opportunities to gain experience of teaching post-16. It is a very practical course with at least two thirds of the time spent in schools, mostly working with teachers and pupils, and around one third spent on your own study with training sessions in the university or locally to your school.

Our mainstream PGCE subjects are currently English, Mathematics, Music, Religious Education, and Science with Biology, Chemistry or Physics. In addition we have these and many more subjects available through the School Direct route to PGCE, such as Art & Design, Computer Science, Drama, Geography, History, PE and Modern Languages. This range can increase further where schools see an emerging recruitment need in their school or cluster of schools. It is also possible to specialise in the 14 to 19 age range in some subjects through School Direct. For the up-to-date list see the BGU website, www.bishopg.ac.uk/courses.
