Course content

Research students are welcomed to Brunel as valued members of our thriving, research-intensive community. A research degree provides the opportunity to investigate a topic in depth, and contribute new knowledge to your discipline. A PhD involves demonstrating through original research or other advanced scholarship the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, a systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of an academic discipline or professional practice, the ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the general of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline. Both full-time (3 years) and part-time (6 years) study routes are available

Research profile

Design for Sustainable Manufacturing research at Brunel is a multidisciplinary activity driven by human needs. The team has a well-established record of research excellence and a broad spectrum of expertise that spans human-centred, inclusive and sustainable design; design management and CAD; design-led electronic, mechanical, manufacturing and materials engineering; and social sciences.

We are particularly interested in supervising students' research in the following areas:

  • Product service systems, sustainable service design, and social dimensions of sustainable design
  • Engineering Design
  • Design and manufacture of smart textiles and smart materials
  • Sustainable design and manufacture
  • Biomimmetics
  • 3D printing / additive manufacturing / multi material printing / 4D printing
  • Design for 3D printing
  • Design and manufacture of energy harvesting and energy storage devices

Information for international students

All international students must show evidence that they meet the English requirement for their course of study: IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in any section). This applies even if English is the native language of your home country.
