Course content

Our two-year PGDip in Nursing allows graduates with an honours degree to take the next steps towards a rewarding career in nursing. As a graduate you already have many transferrable skills needed to succeed, including ability to organise, work within a team and manage your time. Your degree means you can complete your nursing qualification and register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)faster.

Working with patients can be challenging and complex. We help you develop the necessary personal and professional qualities of a good nurse. As well as learning about policy and procedure, you will develop important attributes such as empathy and compassion. Additionally you'll learn how to cope with challenging situations and will leave the course feeling confident in a clinical setting.

Nurses require excellent communication. As part of the practical element of the course you will work with other health professionals to manage patients and attend to their specific needs. The mix of contact hours and work placements means when you finish the course you'll have all the necessary skills to deliver a high standard of care.

We understand that it's important for you to gain practical experience and the positive impact it will have on your study. From year one you will develop skills in a clinical environment and be supported by a range of professionals. Working in this environment reminds and motivates you that you will be making a positive difference to the life of others once you are qualified.

As a mental health nurse you will plan and deliver care for patients in hospitals, residential units and patient's homes. You may also find you will develop expertise in a particular area such as substance misuse or adolescence mental health services.
