A 2:2 honours degree in History or a relevant discipline is required. Holders of other qualifications will be considered individually.

If English is not your first language you require an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no element below 6.0.

Course content

Every aspect of life was utterly transformed in the Modern period. The wide range of our staff research activity lets you focus on what most interests you, whether that’s the Cold War, the Russian Revolution 1917-21, ‘The Troubles’ in Ireland or the global impact of cultural shifts in the 1960’s.

At every stage you are encourage to feel part of our vibrant and supportive postgraduate community. Our innovative Reading Group module lets you shape the content of the course by selecting readings for discussion plus you’ll be able to present at workshops, seminars, and conferences.

You will be able to choose from a range of modules taught by leading experts in their field, design your own short courses, receive training in research skills, run your own reading group, undertake work placements, and complete a dissertation.

The MA in Modern History aims to enable you to develop:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of the approaches and methods used by historians from a range of sub-disciplines to study modern period.
  2. Training in specific research skills commensurate with your future career plans and continuing professional development.
  3. Confidence in handling a broad spectrum of primary evidence.
  4. An appreciation of a culturally and socially sensitive learning environment.
  5. The ability to analyse and evaluate theories and approaches to the study of the modern period.
  6. An understanding of the values of internationalisation, global citizenship and sustainability, through reflection on the diversity of modern cultures.
