Entry requirements

A good honours degree (2:2 or above) with at least 50% of it in Music but the music component of your degree might include Western Classical music, music from other cultures, or popular music. Most importantly, you need to be a passionate and practicing musician in order to be able to model and lead performing (including singing and instrumental performance), composing and listening activities. Applicants need to be able to demonstrate graduate level competence in these areas. English and Maths at GCSE (grade C or above) or equivalent for Secondary (11-18). To have passed the government's skills tests in literacy and numeracy. In addition to the academic requirements, you should also have a recommended period of at least ten days school experience in the year prior to application, preferably in a UK state school, observing the age group and curriculum relevant to the PGCE course for which an application is being made.

Course content

Music is a vital and dynamic aspect of the National Curriculum and is an important human practice throughout the world. The 11-18 PGCE Music course prepares students to teach this challenging and fulfilling subject in a way which reflects the essence of music itself i.e. a unique practical and creative discipline in which we can understand and express our ideas. The course allows student teachers to develop their graduate musicianship in the context of the classroom and thus empower young people to use music as part of their lives.
