Entry requirements

A good honours degree (2:2 or above) in a subject related to PE. English and Maths at GCSE (grade C or above) or equivalent for Secondary (11-18). To have passed the government's skills tests in literacy and numeracy. In addition to the academic requirements, you should also have a recommended period of at least ten days school experience in the year prior to application, preferably in a UK state school, observing the age group and curriculum relevant to the PGCE course for which an application is being made.

Course content

The 11-18 PGCE in Physical Education is a nine month programme, which prepares graduates for teaching the 11-18 age range in the Secondary sector. On completion of the course you will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status. The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent where you will spend 24 out of the 36 weeks learning to teach in two contrasting schools under the supervision of an experienced teacher who will act as a mentor.

What will I study?

All PGCE courses cover three main areas:

  1. Curriculum Studies
  2. Professional Studies
  3. and Enhanced Studies.

However all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice. PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.
