According to the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 70% of the Cardiff School of Sport’s research has international impact with a quarter being classified as internationally excellent or world leading. The university power rankings calculated by Research Fortnight, based on the quality and quantity of research output, shows that Cardiff Metropolitan University is ranked 6th in the UK and 1st in Wales in Unit of Assessment 46 - Sports-Related Subjects.

The Cardiff School of Sport prides itself on its growing reputation for World Leading and Internationally Excellent research. Research is a strategic priority for the Cardiff School of Sport and its importance is evidenced by the breadth, depth and quality of research activity that staff are engaged in. The School's commitment to fostering a vibrant research culture and supporting staff in their research aspirations is central to its ethos of research informed teaching and learning, as well as external engagement.

Through knowledge creation, enhancement and transfer, research activity within the School impacts upon a range of real-world contexts related to sport, exercise and health. Indeed, the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework are testament to the wide-ranging, high quality, and impactful research conducted by staff in the School.

Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014

The Cardiff School of Sport was one of three REF returns made by the University that contributed to Cardiff Met being the leading post-1992 University for research quality.

The joint submission made by the Cardiff School of Sport and the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences at Bangor University was ranked 7th out of 51 submissions both on research power and research quality by the Times Higher Education. Significantly, in the overall quality profile for our submission to Unit of Assessment 26 (Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism), 80% of the research was rated as World Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*). The impact of our research on the world beyond academia and the research environment was entirely rated as 4* or 3*
