Course content

The School of Medicine Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) programme provides training for postgraduate students in biomedical research at Masters level and will develop research and other transferable skills suitable for careers in academic or industrial research.

The PgCert programme is in place to give students the opportunity to participate in an interdisciplinary postgraduate research qualification. The PgCert award in Biomedical Research is a part-time programme extending for 26 weeks (60 credits).

The PgCert programme is composed of modules. These modules are also used as the taught stage of their programme by those studying for the Master of Research (MRes) degree in Biomedical Research to obtain a standalone Level 7qualification.

The programme includes two core taught modules on research skills development in key areas such as scientific writing, critical appraisal, data and grant proposal preparation. There is then a choice of a third module, giving four optional routes through the programme:

  • Epidemiology
  • Laboratory Techniques
  • Molecular and Experimental Medicine
  • Infection and Immunity

For more details, please see the PgCert Biomedical Research pages of the School website.

The PgCert runs alongside the MRes in Biomedical Research, which is a full-time programme extending for 52 weeks. The MRes programme consists of two taught modules followed by two short and one long research project in areas of biomedical research, in which the School has recognised international expertise.

This PgCert may also be taken by 3 year PhD programme students who pursue the taught modules as their first year training platform. The completion of these modules gives the student knowledge of the intellectual, practical and transferable skills which are appropriate to a qualification in Biomedical Research and their practical application.
