Course content

World War II, also called the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. Triggered by the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, it was the deadliest conflict in history. It devastated the world and changed life as people knew it. Cities were destroyed, national borders were revised and more than 75 million soldiers and civilians died, with millions more wounded, displaced and losing their way of life.

The World War II Diploma Course aims to give you a foundational understanding of the precursor events that lead up to the war, what occurred during the six years of combat, and how the world was changed following its conclusion.

Across 12 modules and five videos, the World War II Diploma Course explains how the conflict began and spread across the main war theatre of Europe.

Significant battlegrounds including Poland, Scandinavia, the Low Countries, France, Britain and Russia are examined, as is the Pacific theatre where the Axis Power Japan and the Allied forces of America fought a brutal and bloody campaign. Other theatres of war, such as the Middle East and North Africa, are also covered.

You will also explore the various ideologies that took centre stage in the conflict—from Fascism to Communism and Democracy—and examine how they manifested in the many heinous acts that took place during and after the conflict.

By studying this course, you will:

  • Gain a deeper all-round knowledge of WWII
  • Understand the various causes of the war
  • Understand the primary Nazi policies, such as Lebensraum and the Final Solution
  • Be familiar with the most significant battles in the war
  • Understand how Japan and the US entered the war
  • Know what the ‘Jewish’ question was and how it underpinned the Holocaust
  • Understand how the war ended in both Europe and the Pacific
  • Understand the legacies of WWII
