Departments information

Cass Business School research activity is organised around three core faculties (Finance, Management, and Actuarial Science and Insurance) and over a dozen interdisciplinary Research Centres and Groups.

Faculty of Actuarial Science and Insurance

The Faculty of Actuarial Science and Insurance is one of the leading academic actuarial departments in the world, with highly respected degree courses and research.

The Faculty is involved in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees covering a large proportion of the professional Actuarial qualifications. The Faculty of Actuarial Science and Insurance makes use of its position close to the heart of the City of London to enhance its research, teaching and external profile. Its research considers a range of theoretical and applied issues in pensions, life and general insurance, and health care. Particular avenues of research include insurance solvency, mortality and longevity modelling, risk management, pricing in competitive markets, dependency between risks, the impact of fair value accounting on insurance and the funding of social care.

Faculty of Finance

The Cass Finance Faculty is one of the largest and widely recognised in the world.

Our students have access to a variety of courses reflecting the latest research findings and market practices. We engage regularly with financial practitioners and policy makers. The unique and direct access to leading figures from the business world enables us to incorporate real-world experience and developments.

We take pride in teaching and research of the highest academic standard and direct practical relevance. Our research is published routinely in the top journals in finance, accounting and economics..

Our faculty provides knowledge transfer in a number of ways and consults and provides advice regularly to several premier policy-making institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Bank of England, the US Federal Reserve and a wide range of financial corporations in the City of London.

Faculty of Management

Our mission is to provide rigorous, relevant and innovative academic inputs that meet the needs of the School's stakeholders, particularly our students.

At all times we place great emphasis on making sure that our theories are well founded academically and closely related to real world practice. Our proximity to the City of London is a great advantage in this sense.

It helps us to analyse and understand the extent to which our work is applicable to the financial and professional services firms with which we have ongoing relationships.

The diverse range of entertainment, shops, restaurants and bars in the area mean there's something for everyone.

The local area is home to world class arts centres the Barbican and Sadler's Wells hosting live music, dance, theatre and cinema from around the world; mainstream and art-house (Screen on the Green) cinemas; live music venues, such as the O2 Academy Islington; nightclubs including the famous Fabric; theatres – some less than ten minutes' walk from the main City buildings; and comedy clubs.

Soak up some history along with the modern culture, with a visit to the nearby Museum of London or to the British Library, which often holds exhibitions alongside its massive collection of 14 million books, 920,000 journal and newspaper titles and three million sound recordings.

City is close to several Underground lines, so it's easy to travel around, making other areas of central London feel local, too.

Islington boasts many essential services such as supermarkets, newsagents and banks as well as numerous high-street shops and street markets. Both Clerkenwell and Shoreditch are peppered with small boutiques and designer stores. A short bus or tube ride away, Covent Garden, Oxford Street and Carnaby Street house some of the most famous stores in Europe.

Locally we have some of the best restaurants in London and there are plenty of low-budget and takeaway options, with food from a multitude of cultures. Nearby Exmouth Market and Whitecross Street provide excellent street food at lunchtime, and great restaurants in the evening. Many of the local bars and pubs also serve food, often at discounted price for Cass students. You'll be in walking distance of a variety of bars, serving up live music, theatre and film screenings as well as the more usual drinks.
