We prefer you to have an undergraduate degree in music. However, if you have an advanced level in composition you may also be considered for those pathways. We accept qualifications other than music degrees for entry onto the Ethnomusicology MA pathway.
Months of entry
City's Composition MA develops your skills within the broad field of contemporary composition, which includes:
- notated and digital music
- sounds arts
- interdisciplinary practices.
Students’ understanding of creative practice is enhanced through critical engagement with theoretical concepts and current issues in contemporary composition. You will have opportunities to work with performers and/or other collaborators on innovative new projects.
The programme is focused and rigorous and provides ideal training for those wishing to proceed to a research degree, and prepares students for the professional world of composition.
Engagement with professional creative practice is at the core of the MA Composition. Uniquely, students have the opportunity to receive individual tuition from world-renowned composers external to the department. There are also opportunities to work with City’s professional ensembles-in-residence, Plus Minus and EXAUDI. The Composition Forum features a programme of visiting composers and sound artists and provides a critical context for participating in discussion and debate on key topics in contemporary composition, as well as a platform for presenting your own work to an audience of peers.
