Entry requirements

You will normally have an honours degree in an art or design discipline, but if you are accomplished in an aspect of art and design practice, you will be considered on your merits.

Applicants must submit a portfolio presentation of their work in any media and should also demonstrate some experience or knowledge of hybrid media in convergent arts-related activities. Applicants must also have a capacity for critical thinking and reflection and be able to demonstrate this in written form.

If you have a passion for contemporary art and want to improve your artistic skills, a postgraduate contemporary arts degree can teach you even more than you thought possible, fostering on your individual creativity.

This Master’s in Contemporary Arts continues a long tradition of innovation and creativity at Coventry University since 1843. In 2016, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the launch of what was then Europe’s first postgraduate electronic arts/graphics course. Today, a thriving PhD and applied research culture builds is aided by creative partnerships with Turner Prize-winning projects, external arts organisations, funders and industrial links.

The harnessing of new technologies, hybrid approaches and social media means this is an exciting time to be engaged in the world of contemporary art. If you have a passion for contemporary art, this course provides an opportunity to discover the value of art and culture, with an emphasis on the fostering of individual creativity through innovative practice within the broader context of the creative industries and related professional arenas.

We will encourage you to explore conceptually and creatively contemporary artistic practice and the developments in visual art in the late 20th/early 21st centuries. Once you have progressed from certificate level to diploma level, you will be encouraged to align yourself with an area of professional practice which suits your own interests and passion, such as fine art, media arts and digital arts.
