Entry requirements

To commence the full-time MSc Renewable Energy Engineering course, applicants must:

  • Be an honours graduate of any physical science, mathematics or engineering discipline (minimum 2:2 or higher), obtained from a recognised university/HE institution, or hold an equivalent qualification acceptable to Coventry University.

Students who do not fit with the above entry requirements can gain entry, but their degrees and experience will be assessed for appropriate content by the course director.

There is an accreditation for Prior Learning (APL) process available which is in accordance with University regulations for taught postgraduate courses. The accreditation for Prior Experiential learning (APEL) will only be awarded for achievements equivalent to master’s level. AP(E)L will be assessed in line with University Regulations.

Overview

This course starts in September 2017.

This course is designed for students that are interested in supporting the renewable energy industry as it continues its rapid growth to tackle the severe issues posed by climate change. Students will have the opportunity to advance their engineering proficiency and develop new skills and knowledge.

Through the exploration of current and emerging technologies and applications for renewable energy, students will be prepared to make significant contributions to their professions, the economy and society.

Through a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) recognised business module, students will develop their project management skills and have the opportunity to gain level 7 certificates in consultancy and leadership.

Teaching and project supervision is provided by experienced academics who are research leaders in the field of renewable energy.

The course is designed for students from a variety of different academic and professional backgrounds.

What will I learn?

This course will enable students to develop and critically analyse technologies and applications for renewable heat, power and transportation. Students will learn how to apply their engineering knowledge to address the requirement for cost-effective carbon reduction solutions and appraise the global socio-economic challenges associated with renewable energy.

How will this course be taught?

The delivery of the curriculum will be informed by University and Faculty/School developments in teaching and learning, including the University’s Teaching and Learning Strategy. The EEC faculty has an ‘Activity Led Learning’ (ALL) delivery approach to all its courses and the Engineering and Computing Building has been designed to support this. This programme aligns well to ALL as it is inherently very practical, due to the use of computational simulations, numerical modelling and laboratory-based experimentations.

Teaching will be supported by academics who are research leaders in the areas of alternative transportation and solar, wind, hydro and bio energy, and teaching activities align with several of the University's Faculty Research Centres (Centre for Mobility and Transport, Flow Measurement and Fluid Mechanics and Low Impact Buildings).

How will I be assessed?

The course assessment strategy is informed by the principles and objectives set out in the Coventry University Group Assessment Strategy 2015-2021.

The course will adopt a suitable blend of formative and summative assessment points to ensure that students are fairly assessed and to monitor student progression towards achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments will include exams, individual assignments and group work elements that clearly explain the opportunity for individual marks.

All assessments will be designed to enable equal attainment opportunities for students. Early and ongoing constructive feedback will be provided throughout all of the modules to promote self-reflection.
