You will normally require an Honours degree (at least a 2:1) or its equivalent and (for the MLitt or PhD) a Masters degree from a recognised university. When submitting your application you will need to include a piece of written work approximately 1,200 words in length on a literary subject. This can be any piece of work you have completed during the last two years.
Months of entry
Our research has regional, national and international impacts. We work with partner institutions such as the Durham Book Festival, with medical practitioners through the Centre for Medical Humanities, and with many other public and private organisations. The department is committed to engaging public audiences through its programme of events.
The MA by Research is assessed by a dissertation of 50,000 words in length and offers potential progression to PhD. The MLitt is assessed by a dissertation of 70,000 words in length and also offers potential progression to PhD. The PhD is assessed by a dissertation of 100,000 words in length and offers potential progression to post-doctoral research.
Information for international students
English language requirements include an IELTS, with a minimum overall score of 7.5 and not less than 7.0 in writing, with no element less than 6.0; or TOEFL iBT minimum 113 with not less than 26 in writing.
