Entry requirements

You may apply for the course if you have been offered a place on the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS at Edge Hill University, have GCSE Mathematics at Grade B or Grade C or Grades 4-6 (or equivalent), and need to enhance your mathematical subject knowledge.

In these circumstances, completing this subject knowledge enhancement course will typically form part of the offer conditions for a place on our PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS. Please note, however, that completion of this subject knowledge enhancement course does not necessarily qualify you for a place on the PGCE unless this is made clear at the time the offer is made. This will be discussed with you if you are called for an interview.

You may also apply for the course if you have been offered a place on the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS at Edge Hill University, have GCSE Mathematics at Grade A or Grade 7 or above (or equivalent), and wish to refresh your mathematical subject knowledge.

Course content

If you have applied, or are considering applying, to study on the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS at Edge Hill University, this course has been designed to enhance your subject knowledge in mathematics.

If you have GSCE Mathematics at Grade B or C or Grades 4-6 (or equivalent), this subject knowledge enhancement course will enable you to further develop your mathematical subject knowledge to the required level. It is also suitable for applicants to the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS who achieved GCSE Mathematics at Grade A or Grade 7 (or equivalent) who wish to refresh their subject knowledge.

The aim of the course is to prepare you to teach the conceptual and applied aspects of the subject effectively, with competence, enthusiasm and confidence, to learners aged 5-11 years. It will cover the four operations used to solve equations, as well as fractions, decimals and percentages, geometry and statistics, and overarching themes such as problem-solving, fluency and reasoning.
