Months of entry
This programme will train you to teach across the curriculum, with Mathematics as a specialist subject. You’ll gain the confidence and key skills to teach the subject throughout the primary age range.
You follow the same programme as other PGCE (Primary) students, but also receive specialist training in your Mathematics pathway. You'll also undertake a 'Mathematics in Action' research project in a placement school.
This includes taking part in sessions that highlight the global aspect of maths, including the cultural, historical and literary aspects of the discipline.
As part of your PGCE you'll be required to work with children in a range of contexts. These might include focussed interventions with individuals or groups, or larger scale events for the community.
During the autumn term you undertake a block placement in a relevant age phase. The final experience takes place in a consecutive age phase, and usually in the summer term. During this practice you take responsibility for the whole class.
During the spring term you will undertake an enrichment placement. This is an opportunity for you to gain additional experience in an area of interest or development within the primary or special needs school. You won't be observed during the enrichment placement, but the outcomes of what you have learned will be assessed.
Please note that this information may change, depending on school terms.
