Postgraduate Garden Design (Master of Arts, Part 1)
The course aims to help you to:
- To evaluate site and functional constraints and evolve design solutions through critical analysis and research
- To develop in the students an understanding of design as it relates to the garden
- To develop spatial awareness, the capability to organise space with a knowledge and understanding of ergonomics
- To develop a capability in the knowledge of technical support in hard and soft landscape
This module encourages levels of confidence and skills within students to enable them to operate effectively within the workplace. It helps them develop skills in graphic presentation enabling students to communicate advanced concepts clearly and concisely with clients, employers and contractors in the workplace. They will develop a versatile approach to visual concepts and research and develop new and dynamic means of effective communication.
The aim is that the student will understand and develop the critical skills needed to analyse the 2 and 3 dimensional qualities of the designs they produce encouraging reflective practise as part of the design process. They will be able to develop their skills in verbal presentation enabling them to discuss and describe their work effectively and efficiently and to defend their design philosophy.
In this module students will develop analytical design and critical evaluation of the design process in general practice and its relationship to garden design in particular. We encourage and enable the students to consider design as a problem solving exercise in relation to a client brief using interpretive skills in prioritising client and site requirements. They will be able to critically analyse the notion of design as synthesis of function and human activity as a basis for production of successful garden design solutions.
Students will gain an awareness of 3 dimensional space in terms of atmosphere, scale and proportion and we actively encourage informal design criticism. Students are encouraged to investigate, justify and analyse their individual design philosophy and the work of fellow students.
Students will be able to apply research and analysis into the intellectual development of design ideas and philosophies and broaden design awareness through the processes of development. We will encourage the students to explore concepts and imagery relevant to their development as designers and to provide a structured approach to site assessment.
Students will learn how to survey and use levelling to enable them to brief a professional survey team and to read and interpret full level surveys whilst developing a range of skills suitable to and preparing for a future as a self employed garden designer.
This module aims to develop a comprehensive knowledge of plant materials whilst mainly based on northern European planting, through the development of their own individual project students will be able to gain first hand knowledge of planting in their own place of work. They will gain an advanced understanding of sophisticated planting detail and association through a range of tutor and student led visits looking a plant detail and association in a contextualised environment.
Students will gain effective and accurate knowledge of how to produce planting plans and schedules in support of their design concepts using design as the main emphasis for producing these schemes looking at colour, texture, form and habit prior to horticultural constraints. Students will develop awareness of current research and source materials in development of detailed design solution schedules and written specifications for garden designers. Visits to nurseries and plant suppliers during the course and during work experience allow students to communicate effectively within the horticultural and construction world.
Students will develop an advanced understanding of hard materials and apply this to the detailed development of garden design solutions. Through a variety of visits and hands on experience during work experience students will be able to produce effective and accurate working detailed drawings in support of and appropriate to their design concepts. Students develop research and source materials in development of detailed design solutions and written specifications in line with those required by the Society of Garden Designers. Students promote the synergy between theory and practice by resolving issues without a loss of design integrity, therefore creating bespoke design solutions appropriate to both the site and client.
This module is delivered to both interior and garden students and introduces the research strategy and practice. The use of IT and library materials for the identification of primary and secondary research resources is vital. Students are required to undertake two written pieces of coursework, a research report and proposal exercise linked to the thesis that they will explore when completing their Master of Arts in year 2. Students are required to critically analyse and reflect upon their work and those of other designers, presenting written reports in the standard academic format. Through a Personal Development Plan students keep throughout the year they will maintain an ongoing discussion with the course director, which assists and determines the self directed scope of their work.
