A piece of independently produced academic work (e.g. a Master’s essay/dissertation or published or unpublished paper) that has been assessed by the supervisor and admissions tutor as showing potential for doctoral level work.
An approved professional qualification and extensive practical experience in the relevant field may be taken into account when evaluating an application.

The highly-rated department provides extensive research training recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council. We run research programmes for MPhil & PhD, two professional doctorates (Doctor of Education/Doctor of Professional Studies & Doctor of Ministry - see entries under taught programme listings for details) and two master's in research (Education & Social Science; Language, Discourse & Communication). Our research infrastructure is organised around seven research groups - Assessment, Centre for Public Policy Research; Centre for Theology, Religion & Culture; Language & Literacy; Mathematics Education; Psychology & Cognitive Processes, Science Education - with ICT & Education as a cross-cutting theme.
