Entry requirements

The successful applicant must have a 1st or upper second class degree in a quantitative discipline such as management science, maths, stats, physics, computer science, or engineering; have experience with optimisation models, heuristics algorithms and programming; and shows a strong interest in (electric) vehicle routing problems.

  • Have your tuition fees reduced. Your partner company pays £2,200 towards your fees, meaning students eligible for home fees pay only £2,300. International students will need to pay the remaining £20,050.

The Challenge

Driving Electric Vehicle Transition By Optimising Resources

The ability to charge the fleet will increase pressure on the UK power network, there are no guarantees that the required amount of power can be delivered to sites without large infrastructure upgrades. This could lead to a reduction in the combined fleet range, this shortfall could be mitigated against by using smart solutions to assist with the planning of fleets and delivery of charge.

This research focuses on these smart solutions, by integrating the charge management with the vehicle routing and planning, this will ensure that each individual vehicle battery charge is sufficient to complete the work required of it, or more specifically the route for a vehicle does not exceed the amount of charge than can be delivered to that vehicle, when it is charging time, and power is shared between the fleet.

Enterprise and collaborative partners

Miralis Data is based in Lancaster in the North West UK. The business was established in 2016 and was created with the central aim of reducing carbon emissions and air pollution from logistics and supply chains. Tackling the issue requires development of commercial solutions that address the environmental challenge and drive businesses, and organisations make significant financial savings through productivity and efficiency gains.Miralis provide a multifaceted approach to creating efficiencies, reducing costs and striving for lower emissions in transport, logistics and supply chain. Through product development, consultancy and extensive research and development, their teams leverage data to optimise logistics, worldwide.

This project will be supervised by Dr Burak Boyaci - Senior Lecturer, Dept of Management Science, Lancaster University, Professor Guglielmo Lulli – Professor in Network Analytics, Lancaster University and Dr Will Maden – Director of Research and Innovation.
