Course content

We warmly welcome enquiries from appropriately qualified applicants who are keen to register for doctoral research in any of the areas covered by our staff expertise in Translation and related areas (including comparatist projects). Our language specialisms are Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.

Whilst the programme is predominantly research based, you will be supported with access to a selection of taught courses providing skills in many areas of research, including the core module, ‘Research Skills for Modern Linguists’. This provision provides the opportunity to extend your knowledge beyond the focus of your thesis, and includes the opportunity to develop skills to support your career development.

PhD students in the Department of Languages and Cultures are supported by two supervisors and are fully integrated into the research culture of the Department. You will be expected to attend and present your work at postgraduate work-in-progress seminars, and will have representation on relevant departmental committees.

Information for international students

We may ask you to provide a recognised English language qualification, dependent upon your nationality and where you have studied previously.

We normally require an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 6.5, and a minimum of 6.0 in each element of the test. We also consider other English language qualifications.

If your score is below our requirements, you may be eligible for one of our pre-sessional English language programmes.
