Applicants should have at least a lower second-class honours degree relevant to secondary education in or related to the subject area the candidate is applying for.
GCSES: All applicants must have grade C passes in GCSE English Language and Maths (or equivalent) before making their application. Key Skills, Functional Skills and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy/Literacy are not accepted in place of GCSEs.
Practical Experience: Evidence of recent experience in a UK Secondary school must have been completed prior to you making your application. Other experiences of working with children may be taken into consideration.
Professional Skills Tests: The PGCE Secondary Education (11-16) entry requirements also include statutory Government requirements for trainees entering ITE. These are Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy that must be passed before commencing a QTS course. Further information about registering for and completing these tests can be found on the Department for Education website.
English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no skills below 6.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Television has helped revitalise the public interest in science and, as a secondary school teacher, you can also play your part in bringing physics to life for a new generation. Your teaching, lessons and experiments can help to engage young minds and transform their understanding of the subject. Your inspirational teaching could also help break down barriers and tackle the gender bias in physics.
Developing your teaching ability will be our key aim. You will be encouraged to think creatively in order to spark your pupils' interest in gravity, astronomy and quantum mechanics. You will learn how to teach the story of physics to your students in a way that will fire their interest and shape their understanding of the world, focusing on key figures such as Newton, Einstein and Feynman.
A key part of your training will be learning how to take a constructivist approach to your teaching, whereby active learning is promoted and your pupils are encouraged to learn through problem solving and self-discovery.
You will learn how to maximise the potential of all your pupils by 'scaffolding' their learning and devising lesson plans for different abilities in your classroom.
