Public International Law (Advanced) Specialisations

International legal questions

The Master of Laws’ Advanced Studies in Public International Law is an intensive, high-level postgraduate programme which will bring you to the doorstep of international courts and tribunals. As a student in one of the two specialisations of this programme, you will gain in-depth knowledge of the foundations of public international law and become familiar with the current debates in the field.
An important objective of our programme is to provide you with skills that will enable you to thoroughly analyse and interpret legal sources, literature, and cases, to research and formulate an independent opinion on international legal questions. You will also learn to clearly present your findings both orally and in writing to legal specialists as well as non-lawyers, to actively participate in academic debate, and to apply this advanced academic knowledge in public international law in a professional context.

International courts and tribunals

The programme benefits from the proximity of the many international judicial and other institutions in nearby The Hague, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).

For who?

• law graduates or professionals in possession of a full law degree (offering access to legal practice), with sufficient knowledge of public international law;
• graduates who hold an equivalent degree and/or have sufficient professional experience in the field.

The programme caters for those already working in, or pursuing a career in international organisations, governmental institutions, international non-governmental organisations, or in academia.

Professionals about the programme

“The programme, ideally located in The Hague, offers students the unique opportunity to have a face-to-face conversation with Judges and other people working in International Criminal Justice” (Judge Elizabeth Odio-Benito, International Criminal Court)

“This is an excellent programme. It is a pleasure to meet such dedicated professors and talented students from all parts of the world and to discuss criminal law and ICC procedure with them at the Court or at Campus Den Haag” (Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova, International Criminal Court )
