Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology Specialisations

Would you like to study one of our two unique specialisations and graduate by using audio-visual methods and making a documentary or multi-media project. Come to Leiden for our programme in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology!

3 Reasons to do your master CA-DS in Leiden:

  • Acquire ethnographic skills at the field schools in South-East Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Specialise in the anthropology of a Sustainable world or Media and visual culture
  • The option to graduate with your own film or online project at the only CA-DS programme in the Netherlands offering Visual Ethnography

In this master’s programme you will learn to analyse the everyday practice of individuals, groups and communities; how to approach and situate them within the complex processes of social and global change.

Two specialisations in Leiden

The programme at Leiden is personal, provides a very broad range of theoretical, methodological and regional interests, and is renowned for its internationally oriented expertise and the two unique specialisations:

1. Specialisation Anthropology of a Sustainable World

Studying a sustainable world, you will analyse the impact of globalisation on environment, culture and economy. Issues of development sociology, environmental management, and nature conservation will be discussed as well as global economics and politics. You will be capable of contributing to sustainable solutions for present-day challenges from a socio-cultural, environmental and human rights’ perspective. Within this specialisation you can choose between two tracks: Global Economy & Culture and Environment & Development.

2. Specialisation Anthropology of Media and Visual Culture

The master’s specialisation on media and visual culture focuses on the mediation of identities and social processes through public and vernacular forms, such as grassroots media, digital technologies, and visual culture. You will be able to investigate, analyse, and report on contemporary issues, formulating conclusions that will be relevant to policy makers.

Field schools in Asia, Africa and the Netherlands

The Leiden Institute of CA-DS has a lot of expertise on South-East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. As a student, you can enjoy the possibilities of this wide network of international contacts and conduct your own research in one of our field schools abroad, located in Indonesia (Java) or Ghana, and in the Netherlands. For more information check our webpage on the Field schools.

Students are not strictly limited to these regions. If you want to focus your research on another region, it is possible to do your fieldwork there if you have some expertise and speak the local language. You can contact the institute’s coordinator and discuss the feasibility of your research plans.

Visual Ethnography as a Method

All specialisations can be combined with the methodological track‘Visual Ethnography as a Method’ You will learn how to use audio-visual methods as photos, video and audio both as research material as well as reporting tools in anthropological research. Skills are acquired through course work and your own independent academic research project.

For more information about the admission and how to combine this track with the specialisation of your choice check our website.

Is CA-DS for you?

Students in CA-DS are ambitious, independent, curious and persistent. They like to investigate contemporary issues in line with anthropological academic conventions and carry out independent research in the Netherlands or abroad.
