Entry requirements

On application •A minimum 2:2 Honours degree (or recognised equivalent) with at least 50% content in your chosen subject area •A minimum grade C GCSE (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English Language. Prior to starting the course •Passes in Numeracy and Literacy tests •A minimum of 10 days’ work experience in a UK secondary school. Geared to meeting Teaching Standards and Qualified Teacher Status requirements, the training will also support the development of your:

  • critical understanding of education theory and practice
  • reflective practice linked to professional development
  • practitioner research skills for effective teaching and learning
  • understanding and application of subject knowledge

Your professional development will be monitored and supported throughout the course. You will leave with an e-portfolio and a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) plus well developed reviewing and action planning skills that will stand you in good stead for your professional career.

School-based training

You will spend 120 days training in school. Teaching will be predominantly Key Stage 3 and 4 level, although there may also be the opportunity to experience Post-16 learning.

Experienced teacher mentors, working with LJMU tutors, will support your training in our partner schools. Indeed, the excellent relationships between LJMU and these schools will ensure you enjoy a successful placement.

This combination of academic and professional expertise helps ensure that you are well equipped to meet the opportunities and challenges faced by today’s teaching professionals.

Tutorial support is an important part of the process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and fulfil your potential.

Enrichment experiences

You will be expected to engage with a variety of enrichment experiences to challenge and extend your range of skills and enhance employment potential. Such activities may include:

  • supporting learners in community-based education projects and supplementary schools
  • vocational education enrichment placements in industry and cultural organisations
  • participation in school and university teaching projects

Fees and funding

Bursaries are available to support those training to teach. The amount of Bursary depends on your subject and degree classification. For further information you should consult the Get into Teaching website.

If you are eligible for a Bursary you do not need to apply for one; once you are enrolled at LJMU you will begin receiving payments from the beginning of your course.

To encourage graduates to train as Science, Technology Mathematics and Languages teachers, Bursaries of up to £25,000 may be available.

Alternatively, if you have a good first degree, you can apply for a scholarship from professional subject bodies such as the IoP, RSC, IMA and BCS.

Full time students on PGDE courses are eligible for the same range of financial support as undergraduate students. This includes:

  • a non means-tested student loan to cover your tuition fees
  • a means-tested student loan to help cover your living expenses
  • a means-tested maintenance grant, which does not have to be paid back
  • a means-tested LJMU Bursary worth up to £500, which does not have to be paid back
