Entry requirements

All applicants, meeting the following criteria, will be invited to a University selection event. On application •A minimum 2:2 Honours degree (or recognised equivalent) with at least 50% content in your chosen subject area •A minimum grade C GCSE (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English Language. Please see the School of Teacher Education and Professional Learning webpages for details of equivalence tests The National College for Teaching and Learning (NCTL) runs free Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses for potential applicants whose subject knowledge may have weaknesses, possibly because their first degree has less than 60% content in the specific subject area. If you are a graduate in another discipline, with the aptitude and motivation to teach Chemistry, simply let us know you are interested in SKE when you apply. Please note: original evidence of GCSEs and your degree (if you have already graduated) will be required at interview. Prior to starting the course •Passes in Numeracy and Literacy tests •A minimum of 10 days’ work experience in a UK secondary school. We can help to arrange this for successful applicants •An Enhanced DBS Disclosure check, the cost of which will be met by LJMU •You will also need to complete a medical health questionnaire

Geared to meeting Teaching Standards and Qualified Teacher Status requirements, the training will also support the development of your:

  • critical understanding of education theory and practice
  • reflective practice linked to professional development
  • practitioner research skills for effective teaching and learning
  • understanding and application of subject knowledge

Your professional development will be monitored and supported throughout the course. You will leave with an e-portfolio and a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) plus well developed reviewing and action planning skills that will stand you in good stead for your professional career.

School-based training

You will spend 120 days training in school. Teaching will be predominantly Key Stage 3 and 4 level, although there may also be the opportunity to experience Post-16 level.

Experienced teacher mentors, working with LJMU tutors, will support your training in our partner schools. Indeed, the excellent relationships between LJMU and these schools will ensure you enjoy a successful placement.

Tutorial support is an important part of the process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and fulfil your potential.

Enrichment experiences

You will be expected to engage with a variety of enrichment experiences to challenge and extend your range of skills and enhance employment potential. Such activities may include:

  • supporting learners in community-based education projects and supplementary schools
  • vocational education enrichment placements in industry and cultural organisations
  • participation in school and university teaching projects

Fees and funding

To encourage strong graduates to train as Science, Technology and Mathematics teachers, financial incentives of up to £25,000 are available.

You do not need to apply for a Bursary, you will begin receiving payments at the beginning of your course.

Alternatively, if you have a good first degree, you can apply for a scholarship from a professional subject bodies such as the IoP, RSC, IMA and BCS.

Full-time students on PGDE courses are eligible for the same range of financial support as undergraduate students. This includes:

  • a non means-tested student loan to cover your tuition fees
  • a means-tested student loan to help cover your living expenses
  • a means-tested maintenance grant, which does not have to be paid back
  • a means-tested LJMU Bursary worth up to £500, which does not have to be paid back

Please note:

  • You will be charged a tuition fee of £9,000 for your PGDE course - you can take out a tuition fees loan to pay for this
  • Your tuition fees loan is not means-tested and covers the full amount of your tuition fees. This money is paid direct to LJMU
  • Maintenance loans are means-tested and the amount you receive will depend on your household income (parents’ or partner’s income plus yours)
  • You only start repaying your students loan after you graduate and start earning over £21,000
