You should hold, or be expected to achieve, at least a 2:2 Honours degree classification (or recognised equivalent) with at least 60% content in the subject area. You should also have a minimum of 10 days experience of working in a secondary school (in England or UK) environment prior to application. Nationally, all secondary initial teacher training courses require GCSE qualifications at grade C (or the equivalent) in Mathematics and English language prior to the start of the course. LJMU provides GCSE Equivalence Tests for applicants who do not hold these qualifications – further information is available at www.ljmu.ac.uk/teaching/gcse. Please note that original evidence of GCSE achieved and degree (if already achieved) will be required at interview.

The course will enable you to teach all aspects of secondary school Physics up to GCSE and A-Level and Mathematics to Key Stage 3 (age range 11-13).
The guiding philosophy of the course is that the University-based sessions are intended to support the students’ independent study. To succeed, students will be expected to be highly motivated independent learners with the commitment and enthusiasm to engage with a challenging subject in a short and intense period of time.
The PGDE in Physics with Mathematics programme provides an intensive training experience, tightly focused on providing you with the skills, knowledge and attributes you will need when embarking on your teaching career.
Based on training geared to meeting the Teaching Standards and Qualified Teacher Status, this postgraduate programme also supports the development of your:
- critical understanding of education theory and practice relevant to the subject area
- reflective practice linked to professional development
practitioner research skills for effective teaching and learning
- understanding and application of subject knowledge
The programme includes a mix of on-campus and school/college based training, with the latter becoming predominant as you progress through the course, and this is supplemented with on-line e-learning activities via the university’s Blackboard software. The University element of the programme is based around six modules focusing on:
- Professional Practice
- Developing Reflective Professional Practice
- Subject Pedagogy in Physics and Mathematics
- Pedagogy in Practice
- Learning Teaching and Assessment
You will spend 120 days in school based training. Here, teaching will predominantly be at Key Stage 3 and 4, although there may be opportunities to gain experience with Post-16. Experienced subject teacher mentors, working in partnership with LJMU tutors, will support your training in partner secondary schools. The excellent relationships established between LJMU and partner schools will help to ensure that you have a successful placement experience.

Trainees are expected to engage with a variety of enrichment experiences that challenge and extend their repertoire of skills and enhance employment potential. Such activities may include supporting learners in community based education projects and supplementary schools, vocational education enrichment placements in industry and cultural organisations, and participation in school and university teaching projects.

Fees and funding
You will be charged a tuition fee of £9,000 for your PGDE course - you can take out a tuition fees loan to pay your fees.
Full-time students on PGDE courses are eligible for the same range of financial support as undergraduate students. This includes:
- a non-means student loan to cover your tuition fees
- a means-tested student loan to help cover your living expenses
- a means-tested maintenance grant, which does not have to be paid back
- a means-tested LJMU bursary worth up to £500, which does not have to be paid back

- Your tuition fees loan is not-means tested and covers the full amount of your tuition fees. This money is paid direct to LJMU.
