Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements are as follows for PGCE or PGCE School Direct: Relevant UK degree grade 2.2 or equivalent. Other than "pure Physics", appropriate degrees might include; geology, metallurgy, chemical engineering and forensic science. GCSE English grade C or above (or equivalent), GCSE Maths grade C or above (or equivalent) QTS Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy, A valid DBS Disclosure Certificate and Confirmation of Fitness to Teach (London Metropolitan University Health Check). You will be advised to apply for these after an offer is made. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. For more information about English qualifications please see our English language requirements. Further details: Before you can be permitted to enrol to this course you must take and pass the QTS skills tests as required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). If you have not already passed this test this will be made a condition of your offer with a strict deadline for completion. In practice London Met would prefer these results are confirmed before offering an interview. Prior to interview London Met strongly recommends that you have a minimum of 10 working days recent experience (within the past year) in a school. In the interview your understanding of current teaching practice and issues in schools will be assessed. In particular, as our placements are based in London, you should have an awareness of multicultural and other arising issues when teaching in urban based schools. You may be invited to interview based on information given in your application, please ensure the work experience section of your application includes details of your current/recent school experience. Some offers may stipulate further school experience if required. A full GCSE is recommended but we can also accept equivalences (see Equivalency Testing or A Star Teachers). If these routes to confirm a GCSE are unavailable then an internal test in maths or English may be offered to applicants that have been offered a place. This is normally only available if your offer has been made very close to the course start date. The University will assess any overseas qualifications for equivalence using a number of resources including our own internal guidelines, Naric and the Bursary Tables publicly available from the NCTL. Applicants with 3rd class degrees can apply. However, this qualification must be strongly supported by postgraduate study at Master's level and relevant work experience. Note that you will be in competition for a place with applicants that meet and exceed our minimum entry requirements. If you feel your qualifications are slightly lower than our requirements you should contact the Admissions Office for further advice before applying. We do make conditional offers (with strict deadlines) so it is important that you include all pending qualifications in your UCAS application.

Course content

The School Direct model we are adopting is one which aligns the training calendar for the student teacher with the PGCE offered at the university. This means we will only be able to offer places in Primary / Early Years, and in Secondary in Citizenship, English, Maths, MFL, PE and Science (with a specialism in Biology, Chemistry or Physics). Student teachers will attend the training workshops at the university with regular PGCE students. The placements will be planned to take place within the school / consortium of schools with the School Direct allocation. Within the overall requirement of 120 days in school, this time could be divided between two schools with some flexibility.

The consortium is part of the much larger family of nearly 100 School Direct at London Met schools. It represents a large body of schools that have joined together with London Metropolitan University to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University, and the school experience divided between two partner schools. A small number of primary schools have requested School Direct salaried trainees; they will host the trainee for the majority of the course, and release them to the university, for tuition.

The PGCE Secondary Science with Physics courses are all full-time, one-year courses. At their core, each course aims to

  • ensure that you are a competent, dynamic and reflective teacher of science and of your specialist subject
  • enhance your subject knowledge and understanding of the key concepts and processes relevant to current science teaching
  • provide practical experience of a range of teaching strategies and pedagogical techniques
  • provide the necessary skills to facilitate planning of learning opportunities to include individual lesson plans, medium term and long term sequences of learning and extra-curricular learning opportunities

This course will lead to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status whether you apply to London Met for PGCE or through the School Direct at London Met application process.
