About Engineering at Loughborough
Loughborough University offers the following engineering disciplines: Aeronautical and Automotive, Materials, Chemical, Civil and Building, and Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing.
Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering
The department has four major research groups working across the technologies of automotive and aeronautical engineering, ranging from the development of new low emissions combustion systems for gas turbine engines through to fundamental investigations into the operation of hydrogen powered fuel cells.
We have exceptional facilities including our own BAE Systems Hawk aircraft.
For nearly 50 years materials science and engineering has been a core strength at Loughborough University and we have a longstanding international reputation for our materials teaching and research. Our philosophy is based on the engineering application and use of materials which, when processed, are altered in structure and properties. Our research activity focuses on today’s global challenges, including sustainability, nanomaterials, composites and processing.
Our Department of Chemical Engineering is a highly active, research intensive community, with an enterprising culture developed through our successful industrial collaborations, spin-out companies and knowledge transfer partnerships. Our department has a strong and growing research programme with world-class research activities and facilities for teaching, focusing on industry’s and society’s needs.
Civil and Building Engineering
One of four Royal Academy of Engineering designated Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design, the School of Civil and Building Engineering offers a focused suite of postgraduate programmes aligned to meet the needs of industry.
Our programmes also have a long track record of delivering high quality, research-led education within the areas of contemporary construction management, project management, infrastructure management, building engineering, building modelling, building energy demand, air transport management, and waste and water engineering.

The School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering integrates our research and education programmes in order to support the technical and commercial needs of society and to extend the boundaries of current knowledge.
A number of our master’s degree programmes are accredited by one or more of the following professional bodies: the IET, IMechE, InstMC, Royal Aeronautical Society and the Energy Institute.
