Course content

Designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of cutting-edge business theory and practice, our MBA programme is ideal for those seeking to develop an executive career in industry, healthcare, consultancy, banking or the public sector, it is also ideal for those interested in developing their own business.

New for 2016/17, we now offer three pathways to our MBA programme in addition to the general MBA. These are:

  • MBA in Digital Management
  • MBA in Financial Services
  • MBA in Strategic Health and Social Care

[[Professional recognition]]

The programme is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) – a significant benchmark of quality awarded to just 42 of the 120 MBA programmes available in Britain.

Automatic membership of the Chartered Management Institute and a CMI Level 7 Diploma award, in addition to an international study tour and two management development weekends are included in the fees, making it one of the most competitively priced MBA programmes in the UK.

We also enjoy close links with the Institute of Directors (IoD) and our EMBA alumni and students are eligible for preferential membership fees with the IoD.

[[Three stages]]

There are three stages to the programme. During the first stage you will be introduced to the functional disciplines of management and begin to develop the language of management and an understanding of the core concepts within the discipline.

Through the second stage, subject material becomes even more integrative and the programme considers different aspects of strategic management in depth. You are challenged to view an organisation as a complete entity and to consider holistic, strategic approaches. You are also trained in consultancy and research methodologies in order to prepare you for the next stage of the MBA.

In the final stage, you will complete a project. This can be a piece of business consultancy, based upon a real organisation, an enterprise project or a dissertation. This is a substantial piece of work of approximately 12,000-15,000 words and you can use it to research and address a business issue for your organisation or placement provider. Those choosing a specialist pathway will base their research project on a subject area that related to their industry.

[[Core units]]

The taught units are delivered in three-day study blocks and include keynote lectures, seminars, workshops and one-to-one sessions with tutors. The units include:

  • Managing Human Performance
  • Managing Customer Value
  • Managing for Business Excellence
  • Financial Analysis and Management
  • Contemporary Issues in the International Environment
  • Corporate and Business Strategy in an International Context
  • Strategy Implementation

  • Reflections on the MBA Journey

[[Option units]]

The option units enable you to broaden your studies further or to specialise in a particular business discipline. The cross-disciplinary nature of the MBA programme enables us to draw on staff expertise from across the Business School to offer the widest possible choice. The options available each year will vary.

Those on a sector-specific pathway will choose option units that are relative to their chosen pathway.
