Applicants will need to:

- have a minimum of two year's teaching experience
- be able to satisfy on application that they are able to undertake all the programme related tasks
*Applicants must have qualified at level 6 - a foundation degree does not meet our entry requirements.
Applicants should clearly state whether they have QTS on their application form as the award given by the BDA will be Approved Practitioner Status (APS) not Approved Teacher Status (ATS) for those practitioners

Study for a nationally recognised qualification designed for teachers of children and adolescents who are experiencing specific learning difficulties (SpLD) in mathematics.
On our part-time course, you’ll focus on becoming a specialist teacher of children (up to the age of 18) with dyscalculia.
You’ll study two core units, one on nature, identification and assessment, and the other on supporting learners with dyscalculia and other specific learning difficulties in mathematics.
Through these units, you’ll develop your understanding of the problems children with dyscalculia and other mathematics-related difficulties experience.
You’ll examine the debates about the nature and causes of mathematics-related learning difficulties, from cognitive functions to the definition of dyscalculia to gender differences.
You’ll consider cognitive learning styles in mathematics, problem solving approaches, differentiation and ways to improve curriculum access. You’ll also explore the controversies surrounding the form of support children require, such as using educational number games on computers, and speech therapy.
Some of the practical skills you’ll learn include how to write assessment reports, how to teach mathematics using a structured, multisensory approach, and how to plan appropriate intervention strategies.
You can take this course with or without British Dyslexia Association (BDA) accreditation.
If you opt for BDA accreditation, you’ll take an extra unit (Unit 3: Practice Credits). In this unit, you will assess and teach mathematics to one student or a small group of students experiencing SpLD in your workplace. You’ll teach for at least one hour a week for 20 weeks.
