You will normally have an undergraduate honours degree awarded by a UK university, or an equivalent higher education qualification. 2:2 or above, or equivalent which supports the subject knowledge requirements of the National Curriculum for physical education. For exceptional candidates, particularly those with substantial relevant work experience in schools or relevant occupations, we will consider applications from those who hold a 3rd class degree. GCSE English Language and Mathematics Grades C or above, at point of application. You will need to have appropriate experience in UK Secondary schools undertaken in the two years prior to admission. This should include involvement in the learning and teaching process with school students and work shadowing in order to understand the wider day-to-day role of the teacher. Prior to applying to Manchester Met, it is valuable to draw upon your experience in different learning contexts. This can be evidenced in several ways, such as time spent in schools or colleges, relevant practical experience in industry, voluntary organisations and other settings. You should clearly reference this experience in your application and comment on the insights you have gained into the professional teaching role. All PGCE applicants will need to pass pre-entry Professional Skills Tests in Numeracy and Literacy. We recommend you check the Department of Education website for the latest updates. Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of physical education activities. An ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English. Excellent inter-personal skills. An informed and realistic understanding of the complexities and challenge of teaching in a Secondary school. Personal qualities and abilities appropriate to becoming an effective teacher, including a strong motivation to teach young students, an ability to express personal views with clarity and conviction, to listen and respond appropriately to the views of others, awareness of, and commitment to, issues relating to Equal Opportunities and providing all students with an inclusive learning environment. Intellectual capacity to critically reflect upon experience and personal challenges. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check and DfE Fitness to Teach test are also required.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.
This PGCE equips trainees with the skills and competencies to teach Physical Education at secondary level (11-18) with confidence. Training makes use of well-equipped facilities on campus and works in close partnership with local schools and colleges.
Trainees will study all aspects of Physical Education from a teaching perspective, including philosophy, class management and organisation, teaching styles, assessment for learning, short and medium term planning and the implementation of current initatives in PE in schools.
This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.
We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.
