Course content

Our new masters degree supports doctors with a specialist interest in psychiatry or who are pursuing a career in mental health.

The Masters in Medicine (Psychiatry) is a part-time course that provides you with an academic qualification that recognises your interest in mental health. It’s been designed to support the development of doctors in core and specialist training, and general practitioners. For those in specialist training, the programme will complement the work you’ll need to complete for membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

We’ve created this course in conjunction with our strategic health service partners.

You’ll complete four core units, in Evidence-based Practice, Education and Training in Practice, Leadership in Clinical Care Settings, and Research Methods. These units provide you with invaluable transferrable skills, wherever your future career may lead.

You’ll also complete two specialist units, General Adult Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and Psychological Basis of Mental Health Symptoms, and a project related to the field of psychiatry.

The specialist units include opportunities for you to critique and evaluate psychological interventions, critically evaluate psychological theory and discuss patient management through case based discussion groups. You will also develop specialist skills in in the field of mental health assessments and treatment through case based learning, facilitated discussions and peer feedback.

We teach you via blended learning, with online sessions and group work to help you network and share best practice with fellow students.
