The standard entry requirement for the UNIGIS UK programme is either
(i) a Bachelor’s degree with honours OR (ii) a higher education qualification (such as an HND) together with some professional experience OR (iii) significant professional experience in the GI industry.
Please don’t worry if you don’t have a first degree – this does not necessarily preclude you from taking up a place on the UNIGIS programme. Previous UNIGIS students have taken up a place on the programme based on their work experience. Please contact the UNIGIS office and/or Admissions Tutor for further information if you are unsure whether you qualify for entry onto the programme. We will be glad to discuss your options with you.
Months of entry
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) play a crucial part in our everyday lives. Everything from Google Maps and geosocial networking, to utilities, and transportation design rely upon on these innovative technologies and services which allow us to capture, visualise, measure, analyse, and share spatially referenced data.
This distance-learning MSc is a broadly-based postgraduate qualification in the field of GIS, with some flexibility for application selection. This course will allow you to develop in-depth knowledge of the issues involved in applying GIS to solving spatial problems with an understanding of the constraints imposed by application area and the interactions between data, methods, people and technology.
UNIGIS is a Distance Learning Postgraduate Network in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) jointly run by Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford. The UNIGIS network has over 25 years' experience of success in delivering GIS postgraduate courses. Our highly regarded programme is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the GI industry - or those wishing to enter the sector.
This course is offered as part-time study to meet the learning needs of employees within organisations and returning students.
Taught by experienced academics with a wealth of professional experience, you’ll benefit from the resources of two UK universities – Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford – who have been delivering GIS education for over 25 years. Studying part-time by distance learning offers you freedom and flexibility, whether you’re working in industry, and advancing your skillset or simply wish to experience postgraduate study at a pace that suits you. All course materials are delivered online via our virtual learning environment, with student support provided centrally through our dedicated UNIGIS office. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive a postgraduate degree from either MMU or Salford depending upon where they are registered.
On successful completion of MSc Geographical Information Systems, students will be able to:
- Systematically evaluate the principles and methods that underpin the development of a GIS solution
- Synthesise and evaluate the interactions between data, methods and technology and the impact and constraints they place on applications of GIS
- Analyse and evaluate the benefits and challenges presented by the implementation of GIS
- Appraise the technical issues in the development of GIS applications
- Plan, design, implement and evaluate appropriate methodologies for GIS applications
- Design and implement a small-scale GIS research application
All study routes employ web-based delivery and aim to provide the conceptual and technical framework required for an in-depth understanding of GIS.
- Foundations of Geographical Information Systems
- Geodata: Sources, Standards and Quality
- Spatial Databases
