Course content

One of the key recommendations of the Legal Education and Training Review was to strengthen requirements for education and training in, amongst other things, the development of management skills. The Postgraduate Certificate in Legal Practice Management teaches the essential business skills to anyone who manages lawyers. This invigorating programme will enable you think more strategically and to thrive in a market which has undergone a seismic change.

A joint venture between Manchester Met’s Law and Business Schools, and aimed at anyone who manages or plans to manage legal professionals, you will work through six modules in highly interactive small workshops at our £75m RIBA award-winning Business School.

This course is designed specifically by professionals in full-time roles; face-to-face teaching consists of six days plus an induction day. By completing each piece of coursework you will begin to formulate a strategic plan for your business. A written strategic plan is essential for effective management, however we recognise that for many managers of lawyers it remains unwritten. Enrolling on to this programme will allow you to ring-fence time to write your plan efficiently and effectively, with access to expertise and support. The course is taught at MBA Level (Level 7). Graduate who wish to progress their studies with our AMBA-accredited executive MBA will be eligible for module exemptions and reduced tuition fees for the MBA programme.

What you will study

The course is divided into the following six areas of study:

  • Using Financial Analysis to Build Profitability
  • Client and Markets
  • Motivating and Managing Teams
  • Leadership and Managing Change
  • Strategic Planning and Alignment
  • Implementation Strategy

Study pattern

The six full teaching days and induction day are spread over ten months. You will begin in November and results will be announced in November the following year. Before each teaching day you will set pre-reading, and after each teaching day you will complete directed independent study. This will prepare you to complete a coursework assessment in your own time which you will submit online before your next teaching day. Between each teaching day and the hand-in date for the related assessment an optional drop-in clinic is available to you on a designated half-day, where you can discuss your draft with your tutor.

Typical students

This programme is for both law and non-law professionals who manage lawyers or who wish to manage lawyers in the near future. It is ideal for anyone who wants to bolster their management credentials, distinguish themselves from the competition and benefit from innovative thinking and stringer skill sets even before graduation. Our previous students have told us how, as ambitious professionals, they valued the opportunity to learn from one another, share their experiences and build a professional network that continued to deliver support and opportunities beyond completion of the programme. The eligibility criteria is detailed above, but examples of suitable students would include: Manager of in-house lawyers; Finance Director; HR Manager; Practice Manager.
