Course content

Unique to MIT, the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering Practice degree program provides hands-on, real-world experience in industrial settings, and can be completed within a single calendar year after the bachelor’s degree. It may be pursued as a terminal degree.

You will complete two semesters of graduate-level courses at MIT (core plus electives), followed by one semester at industrial sites of the Practice School under the direction of resident MIT staff. Credit for the Practice School semester is accepted in lieu of a Master’s thesis. The industrial exposure, varied technical challenges, and extensive communications requirements, when combined with the MIT coursework, leads to a high degree of professional advancement.

Ranked #1 in the country (USNews) and the world (QS University Rankings), MIT Chemical Engineering includes almost 40 different labs currently making the latest discoveries and innovations in energy and sustainability, materials, polymers, biotechnology and manufacturing.

Fees and funding

British citizens who are – or will be – graduates of British universities should check out Kennedy Scholarships.

These awards offer full tuition and health insurance coverage and a generous stipend towards living expenses, which is means-tested. They are offered annually in competition.

Please note that you will need to submit your application to the scholarship ahead of the deadline for your MIT application. Kennedy Scholarship applications are to be made online via the websites between mid-August and late-October in the same application season as you will submit your application to MIT. Please also note it is totally separate from, and independent of, admission to the program.

Awards made at interview in London in January are provisional, pending confirmation of a place on the course.

See the website for full information.
