We seek a diverse group of applicants from a range of academic disciplines, who work together to contribute to exciting intellectual networks across the department and MIT. While not all of our students come from the domains of Civil and Environmental Engineering, most students matriculate to our department from undergraduate backgrounds in Science, Math, Engineering, or related fields. All students who hope to enroll at MIT for an advanced degree after earning an undergraduate degree elsewhere should give careful attention to undergraduate prerequisites as outlined in our subject descriptions.
The Graduate Record Examination – general exam – is required for all applicants. We are interested in students who have scored in the 80th percentile or better for all three areas of the GRE. Most successful applicants score in the 90th percentile.
When applying for graduate school in engineering, depth often counts more than breadth, and demonstrating your ability to be independent and focused can be more important than having broad interests and a broad range of experiences. Describe your technical expertise with clear details to demonstrate your mastery of the concepts and skills you’ve learned through relevant activities such as lab projects, classes, internships, summer jobs and previous research experience.
Lastly, don’t ignore bad grades or other anomalies in your application package. If you had trouble with a course or another type of challenge, your statement of objectives is a good place to acknowledge that setback and explain what you learned from the experience.

The Master of Engineering (MEng) degree program is our professional-oriented graduate program that consists of high level, fast paced coursework and significant engagement with a real world engineering project, preparing our graduates for a professional career path, or further graduate studies at MIT or elsewhere. This 9 month program, with opportunities for individualized tracks in CEE prepares our graduates for addressing significant challenges in the domains of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Within the Environmental Engineering Science track of the MEng degree program, students pursue classes and research in their areas of interest, including hydrology, environmental chemistry, ecology, and environmental fluid mechanics.
Within the Structural Mechanics and Design track of the MEng degree program, students pursue curriculum and research in areas including structural engineering mechanics, computational design and optimization, and collaborative workflows at the interface of engineering and architecture.

British citizens who are – or will be – graduates of British universities should check out Kennedy Scholarships.
These awards offer full tuition and health insurance coverage and a generous stipend towards living expenses which is means-tested. They are offered annually in competition.
Please note that you will need to submit your application to the award ahead of the deadline for MIT application. Kennedy Scholarship applications are to be made online via the website between mid-August and late-October in the same application season as you will submit your application to MIT. Please also note they are totally separate from, and independent of, admission to the program. Awards made at interview in London in January are provisional, pending confirmation of a place on the course.
