Course content

The Media Lab is a community of designers, researchers, and inventors who work together as members of research teams, doing things that conventional wisdom says can’t or shouldn't be done. The approximately 400 projects under way at the Lab are as varied as the students who conduct them: from tools for learning and expression, to innovative devices for human adaptation and augmentation, to new modes of transportation for tomorrow's smart cities.

Each year, the program accepts approximately 50 master’s and PhD candidates with backgrounds ranging from computer science to psychology, architecture to neuroscience, mechanical engineering to material science, and more. MAS offers approximately 30 graduate courses exploring several themes, including, for example, human-computer interaction, communications, learning, design, and entrepreneurship.

The MAS master requires 2 academic years of residency, during which students complete 5 academic courses in addition to research work.

Fees and funding

British citizens who are – or will be – graduates of British universities should check out Kennedy Scholarships.

These awards offer full tuition and health insurance coverage and a generous stipend towards living expenses, which is means-tested. They are offered annually in competition.

Please note that you will need to submit your application to the scholarship ahead of the deadline for your MIT application. Kennedy Scholarship applications are to be made online via the websites between mid-August and late October in the same application season as you will submit your application to MIT. Please also note it is totally separate from, and independent of, admission to the program. Awards made at interview in London in January are provisional, pending confirmation of a place on the course.
